Elbow Arthroscopy
General Instructions
- Elbow arthroscopy typically allows for quicker recovery than shoulder procedures
- Keep the elbow elevated when possible to reduce swelling
- Begin gentle range of motion exercises early as directed
- Ice the elbow frequently in the first few days
- A splint or sling may be used briefly for comfort
Wound Care
- Small arthroscopic incisions around the elbow
- Keep clean and dry for 48-72 hours
- Waterproof covering for showering after 72 hours
- Sutures or steri-strips removed at first follow-up
Pain Management
- Pain is typically mild to moderate after elbow arthroscopy
- Over-the-counter medications often sufficient after first few days
- Ice and elevation are very helpful
- Keep the elbow moving to prevent stiffness
Activity Restrictions & Timeline
Week 1
- Rest and ice
- Gentle range of motion as tolerated
- Avoid gripping and lifting
Weeks 2-4
- Progressive range of motion
- Light activities as tolerated
- Begin gentle strengthening
Weeks 4-8
- Return to most daily activities
- Progressive strengthening
- Return to desk work typically by 1-2 weeks
Weeks 8-12
- Return to manual labor and sports as cleared
- Full recovery typically by 6-12 weeks
⚠️ When to Call Our Office
Contact us immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Fever or signs of infection
- Increasing swelling or redness
- Numbness in the hand that doesn't improve
- Inability to move the elbow
- Significant increase in pain
Emergency: If you experience chest pain, severe shortness of breath, or signs of a stroke, call 911 immediately.
Follow-Up Schedule
- 7-10 days: Wound check and suture removal
- 4-6 weeks: Progress evaluation
- Additional visits as needed
